Premier Mark McGowan has announced that WA’s fracking moratorium will be lifted to allow fracking across vast parts of Western Australia. This goes against the wishes of the majority of Western Australians, and against the advice of Australia’s most respected climate scientists.

5 million hectares of Western Australia - around three-quarters the size of Tasmania - is now under threat from the fracking industry.

Areas under threat from fracking include:

  • In the Mid West, directly covering the Yarragadee aquifer where Perth draws its drinking water

  • Near Carnarvon, in the water catchment of fruit and vegetable growers producing much of our fresh produce

  • A vast area in the iconic Kimberley, where many Traditional Owner groups have been calling for fracking to be banned

In the lead up to the 2017 State Election, Mark McGowan committed to conduct a full lifecycle assessment of carbon pollution from fracking, and to maintain the fracking moratorium if it were shown to contribute to climate change.

However, the WA Fracking Inquiry ignored the largest sources of pollution from fracking, and estimated the climate impacts of fracking would be negligible. Read here to find out how the inquiry fudged the figures on fracking and climate change.

On the other hand, some of Australia’s most respected climate scientists have said that allowing fracking in WA would be "grossly irresponsible given urgency of the climate situation", and independent analysis showed that fracking in WA could produce many times the carbon pollution of the Adani coal mine.

The majority of Western Australians support a fracking ban, and it's time to take action to protect our water, communities, and climate from this toxic industry.

Together, let's call for a 100% frack free guarantee for Western Australia!
