Heron Point in Exmouth Gulf is a spectacular and tranquil place. The mangroves, sandflats, corals, and sponge gardens along that stretch of coast are a haven for sea life like manta rays, dugongs, and hundreds of species of fish, including giant trevally, bonefish, and prawns.

But unless we take action, our wildlife’s habitat could be cleared for an unapproved oil and gas project from as early as May 2018. This is before any long-term baseline data or independent scientific assessment has been undertaken.

We’re going to do everything we can to prevent unnecessary clearing - but the decision makers need to hear from you too.

With only weeks left to prevent the bulldozers from going in, let’s make every moment count.

Dear Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Environment,

Ningaloo and Exmouth Gulf are beloved by Western Australians. These interconnected systems support each other and provide crucial wildlife habitat, refuge, and replenishment for many migratory, endangered, and protected animals. But these important areas are increasingly under threat from industrialisation.

We call on you to protect Ningaloo and save Exmouth Gulf by preventing premature and unnecessary clearing at Heron Point, by the Subsea 7 Corporation seeking to build a pipeline fabrication and launch facility at Heron Point.

Given the drilling equipment now available, much of the clearing planned by Subsea 7, especially the widening of existing tracks and the over-zealous clearing of bore pads, is unnecessarily destructive, and given the inadequate faunal surveys and the dearth of serious baseline data it is unjustified.

The EPA’s high level of Public Environmental Review describes the need to avoid unnecessary destruction and spreading of weeds. This clearing permit does not reflect this sentiment and must incorporate more considered and defined limits on such clearing, particularly while the EPA is still making its decision.

Please do everything you can to Protect Ningaloo by saving Exmouth Gulf.
