The Northern Jarrah Forests, (south of Perth/Boorloo) are some of the most beautiful, diverse and vulnerable forests on Earth but they are facing a major threat.
More than a century of logging and clearing have had major impacts on the Northern Jarrah Forests, their wildlife and waterways, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recently found that they are one of a handful of Australian ecosystems at particular risk of collapse due to the drying and warming climate.
The native forest logging ban came into force in 2024 (which is massive progress for this area and the rest of the South West’s forests) but another major threat to these forests must be addressed - Forest Mining Expansion.
Right now, both major bauxite mining companies, Alcoa and South32 are seeking huge expansions which would result in the clearing of tens of thousands of hectares of the Northern Jarrah Forests over the next fifteen years.
WAs unique plants and animals are facing multiple threats from a drying climate, industrialisation, urban sprawl and now mining in our forests. We cannot afford to lose any more forest and woodland habitat especially not in one of our last remaining biodiversity hotspots.

Call the federal Minister for Environment Tanya Plibersek today and tell her you want South32's Worsley Mine Expansion rejected and the Northern Jarrah Forests protected.
WA’s Minister for Environment, Reece Whitby, has officially approved South32’s Worsley Bauxite Mine Expansion in the Northern Jarrah Forests.
The decision dismisses over 130 appeals against the Environmental Protection Authority's (EPA) recommendation of conditional approval earlier this year. The recommended conditions are inadequate and cannot ensure the protection of Northern Jarrah Forest, threatened species, water and climate.
The Federal Minister for Environment, Tanya Plibersek, is the final decision-maker. The Minister has 30 business days to make her decision.
Time is of the essence. We need to act now.
Tell Minister Pibersek you want this forest-destroying and emissions-polluting project to be rejected.
You will need to enter your name, mobile and email to make the call.
After you have entered your details, you will receive a call to you mobile which will patch you through to the office of Minister Plibersek.
