The controversial Gorgon gas plant was only approved the WA government because Chevron promised to capture and store 80% of the site's CO2 emissions.

Today, the carbon capture and storage facility (CCS) at Gorgon is only working at one-third capacity and has only captured a fraction of its target.

Meanwhile, Chevron pocketed $60 million in tax payer money.

Last year, the Gorgon plant produced more greenhouse gases in the 12 months to June 2022 than any other industrial facility in Australia.

This is simply not acceptable.

If Chevron can't get the CCS working at Gorgon then it must shut down production.

Tell the Chevron board to shut down Australia's most polluting facility and help prevent billions of tonnes of emissions entering the atmosphere.

MORE INFO

Not only is Chevron Australia’s largest emitter, being involved in three of Australia’s five biggest industrial emitting projects, but on a global scale, it has also released the highest level of carbon emissions for a private company in history!

Chevron operated emissions in Australia increased 28% over the latest 12 month reporting period. These increases are at odds with climate science as the IPCC finds that we need to see deep and sustained emissions reductions to keep global warming below 1.5C. Their emissions are also at odds with Australia’s emissions reduction target of 43% below 2005 levels.

The WA EPA originally rejected Gorgon being constructed on Barrow Island due to the location being a Class A Nature Reserve. The Environment Minister at the time - Mark McGowan - approved the project, on the basis that it would bury at least 80% of its reservoir CO2 over any 5 year period using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

Since then, Gorgon’s CCS facility has been an utter failure, operating at 32% capacity over six years, and resulting in an extra 13,869,578t CO2e entering the atmosphere that should have been captured and stored, and 9,790,895t CO2e entering the atmosphere that was required by law to be captured.

To build the failing Gorgon CCS facility, Chevron received $60 million in direct subsidies from the Federal Government and further subsidies from the WA Government.

Join us in demanding the Chevron leadership team take action and put an end to their destructive emissions contributions.

Tell the Chevron board to shut down Australia's most polluting facility

Chevron is already Australia’s biggest industrial emitter, and is increasing its emissions – in part due to a failed carbon capture and storage system.

We ask the Chevron Board to shut down Chevron’s operations on Barrow Island due to its continued failure to meet environmental approval conditions and its massive, increasing, and avoidable contributions to WA’s emissions.
