Protect Peaceful Protest

Australians have a long and proud history of peaceful demonstration and protest which has been instrumental in securing many of the protections and rights we now take for granted.

But legislation to criminalise protest is being debated in our State Parliament now. Send a powerful and urgent message to your local WA MPs (Legislative Assembly and Council) to protect our rights and our democracy here in WA. Premier Barnett and Leader of The Nationals Terry Redman will be copied in. Please note that your email will go to politicians from the Liberals, Nationals, Labor and/or the Greens, depending on your electorate.

Peaceful demonstration has played an important role in shaping our modern society. The protection of the places we love, from our ancient forests in the Southwest to Ningaloo Reef and James Price Point in the North. And the right to vote, to a fair wage and to a fair price for farm produce.

None of these things would have been achieved without citizens engaging in peaceful protest.

But that’s all about to change with the Barnett Government’s Criminal Code Amendment (Prevention of Lawful Activity) Bill which is being debated right now in our State Parliament.

If passed, this legislation would not only criminalise peaceful protest, but would remove the presumption of innocence for citizens engaging in peaceful protest activities.

Send a powerful and urgent message to your local Members of Parliament asking them to vote against these far reaching laws in Parliament. Your local MPs are required to respond to questions from their constituents. Everyone will have one Legislative Assembly (Lower House) MP the email sends too (and addresses), and copies in your six Legislative Council (Upper House) MPs, as well as cc'ing Premier Barnett and Terry Redman.

Please note that this system is using the politicians official first names, even though many of them are known by nick names or middle names (ie Donald 'Terry' Redman and Ronald 'Shane' Love. Feel free to write your own greeting under the official one, or send an email to them directly from your own email account, without using this form. Handwritten letters are even more powerful.

Email Tips +

We recommend to personalise your email to make it more effective. Ask questions about their position, as your MP is required by law to respond to constituents' questions.

Please note the email will be addressed to your Lower House MP (their official name as listed on the Parliament website, you are welcome to use their nickname below that in your email, ie Terry instead of Donald Redman).
