Protect Peaceful Protest

Protect Peaceful Protest

Australians have a long and proud history of peaceful demonstration and protest which has been instrumental in securing many of the protections and rights we now take for granted.

But legislation to criminalise protest is being debated in our State Parliament right now. Take urgent action now to protect our rights and our democracy here in WA.

Peaceful demonstration has played an important role in shaping our modern society. The protection of the places we love, from our ancient forests in the Southwest to Ningaloo Reef and James Price Point in the North. And the right to vote, to a fair wage and to a fair price for farm produce.

None of these things would have been achieved without citizens engaging in peaceful protest.

Protect Peaceful Protest

The Criminal Code Amendment (Prevention of Lawful Activity) Bill 2015 is, once again, before parliament.

It’s vital that we get our Members of Parliament to refer this shocking attack on our democratic rights to the Legislation Committee.

We need you to call your Members of the Upper House in your electorate. We need you to tell them why you think this bill is a bad idea. Most importantly, we need you to tell us what your Member said.

The Greens and Labor support the referral of this bill to committee. Together we need to convince the Liberals and Nationals to support our rights.

State your name and where you live, and that you are calling to oppose the WA Government’s proposed anti protest (Prevention of Lawful Activity) Bill

  • I am opposed to the new anti protest laws being debated in Parliament. As my representative in Parliament I want you to vote against these laws.
  • I am concerned these laws remove our rights as citizens to peaceful protest. Peaceful protest plays a critical role in our democracy and has been critical in securing the vote, fair pay and environmental protections we take for granted today.
  • I am concerned that the laws reverse the presumption of innocence. This is a fundamental principle of our law and should not be removed for peaceful protesters.
  • This bill creates an offence of possessing “a thing” to be used for protest activity. This can apply to literally any thing and could criminalize the possession of ordinary everyday items.
  • Whatever assurances are offered now may not bind future governments. These laws could be used in extremely harsh ways.
