The WA Fracking Inquiry has now handed in its homework to the McGowan Government. The report has not been released, but a decision could be made at any time to lift the ban on gas fracking in WA.
As the Government considers its position, now is the time to let your MP know that you support a permanent ban on fracking.
WA Labor made an election commitment to maintain the ban on fracking if the Inquiry found that it would "compromise the environment, groundwater, public health, or contribute adversely to climate change" (Mark McGowan, Leader of the Opposition, 2017).
The Fracking Inquiry received thousands of submissions, and thousands of pages of scientific evidence supporting a statewide fracking ban.
This included scientific studies on water pollution risks, health impacts, damage to tourism and agriculture, impacts of fracking on the global climate, and how clean renewable energy can meet our energy needs.
Recently, more than fifty of Australia’s most eminent scientists and experts sent an open letter to the WA Government calling for a permanent ban on fracking in WA due to its climate change impacts.
Our top climate scientists said that fracking in WA must be prevented to avoid one of the world's largest new sources of carbon pollution.
But we know the gas industry has been lobbying Government to allow vast areas of the Mid West and Kimberley to be turned into industrial gasfields.
Who will the Government listen to - scientists and the community, or the fracking industry?
Let your Labor MPs know that you want them to support a permanent ban on gas fracking to protect our water, communities, and climate from this toxic and unwanted industry.
A decision on fracking could be made any day now. Please call your local Labor MP's office now and ask them to support a statewide ban!
