I need you to Save Scott Reef
I am writing to you about the urgent threat to Scott Reef off the coast of Western Australia, where global corporation Woodside plans to drill for gas in a pristine and unique marine ecosystem. Scott Reef is home to endangered species such as pygmy blue whales and green sea turtles, and is a critical part of our natural heritage. The reef, formed millions of years ago, is an essential haven for countless species, including some found nowhere else on Earth. Woodside’s proposed Browse gas development as part of the Burrup Hub would involve drilling up to 50 wells in waters as close as 2.4 km from the reef’s edge. This plan poses a grave risk not only to the biodiversity of Scott Reef, but also to the global climate. The gas extracted from the Browse Basin would contribute to billions of tonnes of climate pollution when burned—directly contradicting Australia’s commitments to addressing climate change. The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (WA EPA) has already highlighted the unacceptable risks to Scott Reef and its marine life. The EPA has only recommended against two other major oil and gas proposals in the last 40 years: one at Ningaloo and the other at Barrow Island. Its warning is clear: allowing drilling near Scott Reef would have profound and irreversible consequences. This decision is among the most critical environmental and climate issues Australia faces. It is essential that we protect Scott Reef and the marine life that relies on it for future generations. I urge you to stand with Australia’s unique marine environments and oppose the approval of this development. Please act in the best interest of our natural heritage and the planet by rejecting these dangerous proposals.
