But the devil is in the detail, the plans still allow for widespread destruction:

mineral and petroleum exploration and development
drilling for iron ore and copper
undersea pipelines, cables and ship loading docks
seismic testing
dredging and dredge spoil dumping
benthic prawn trawling

Dear Lalang-garram/Horizontal Falls Marine Park planners,

I welcome the permanent protection of the world famous Horizontal Falls from copper mining, and see it as an important step towards protection of the Kimberley, as is the proposal to jointly manage the new Lalang-garram Marine Park with the Dambimangari people.

I believe the establishment of 8 new marine sanctuaries in important environments such as Turtle Reef, Walcott Inlet, Storr Island, Kingfisher Island, Ngumbree and the Glenelg River will be critical to the success of the proposed marine park.

In my opinion, mining and destructive fishing techniques such as trawling and gillnet fishing are NOT compatible with preserving one of the world’s most pristine marine environments and should be removed.

This must include the removal of provisions to allow the assessment of mining and ship loading infrastructure within sanctuaries.

I propose joining the Turtle Reef and Kingfisher Island sanctuaries as it would protect a key deep-water habitat and also create Western Australia’s largest marine sanctuary.

Marine sanctuaries at Dugong Bay and Booby Island should be included, plus an extension of the Walcott Inlet sanctuary to protect more habitats and linkages between the inlet and deeper water.

Endangered (IUCN) sawfish and coastal dolphins remain at risk from gillnets and trawling. All sawfish and dolphin habitat should be protected with sanctuaries and special conservation zones.

100 marine scientists recently called for world-class marine protection for the Kimberley Coast, which would require more sanctuary areas.

The Kimberley tourism industry has called for the Kimberley Coast to be protected in Australia’s Best Marine Park to protect and boost their industry.
