If you have been to Point Peron near Rockingham you would know it as a truly incredible place. An amazing array of birds, fish, and even rare sea lions call this natural wonderland their home.

With its nearby islands, seagrass meadows, and fish nurseries, the area provides a home for a colony of Little Penguins - the smallest of all penguins and the only ones that live in Western Australia.

The vulnerable Little Penguins rely on the seagrass meadows in Mangles Bay at Point Peron for feeding as they raise their chicks every year on Penguin Island.

But the State Government ...

With its nearby islands, seagrass meadows, and fish nurseries, the area provides a home for a colony of Little Penguins - the smallest of all penguins and the only ones that live in Western Australia.

The vulnerable Little Penguins rely on the seagrass meadows in Mangles Bay at Point Peron for feeding as they raise their chicks every year on Penguin Island.

But the State Government is right now considering a proposal that would spell disaster for the Little Penguins: dredging their feeding grounds to make way for  a canal-marina and housing development.

Twenty seven scientists and experts have warned that the Little Penguins would suffer starvation and habitat loss, and would be killed by boat propellers as a result of the canal-marina.

The Mangles Bay marina proposal would also privatise a large area of public open space on Point Peron originally entrusted to the State for public use, removing public access to this unique area forever, and bulldozing 40 hectares of “Bush Forever” park land. Point Peron is simply the wrong place for a housing subdivision and marina. 

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti could make a decision on the marina any day now, and the Little Penguins and future for Point Peron are in the balance.

Ask the Minister and the WA Government to save the Little Penguins, and protect Point Peron from this destructive canal and housing development by establishing the Cape Peron Coastal Park instead.

  • Canals are not wanted in Rockingham - 87% of written submissions were against the proposal
  • Little Penguins and other wildlife would be placed at risk, as they feed in Mangles Bay. 27 experts have warned that the Little Penguins would struggle to survive
  • The canal-marina would damage fish stocks and harm fishing
  • ‘Bush Forever’ public land would be lost forever to public housing
  • Cape Peron Coastal Park is a win-win alternative - ecotourism brings in $60 for every dollar invested
