Melville Bird Sanctuary & Discovery Centre - A Better Option for Alfred Cove

Melville Bird Sanctuary & Discovery Centre - A Better Option for Alfred Cove

A unique and internationally important wildlife sanctuary, formed by the Alfred Cove A-Class Nature Reserve and the Swan Estuary Marine Park, is home to some of Western Australia's most exquisite birds and marine life. And it's right here on our doorstep.

But instead of recognising this incredible area for what it is, the WA Government will soon be considering a development application that, if successful, will lead to the construction of an environmentally and economically flawed artificial wave park.

The WA Government needs to recognise this incredible area for what it is - a precious, irreplaceable natural space.

The wave park would simply be out of proportion with its surroundings. The noise, light, traffic, litter, crowds, water and power consumption (plus the risk of leaks and contamination) presented by the large scale artificial wave park development will place the environment and community under significant stress.

Thankfully, this isn't the only option for this special area. Imagine a Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre instead, which would showcase the natural beauty and birdlife of Alfred Cove, and provide a welcome respite from our busy world.

The centre, complete with its own low-impact environmentally friendly cafe, would be an intergenerational attraction to Australian and international visitors alike. It would be  interactive and educational to all, from young children to the elderly.

We don’t want a wave park in such a special and ecologically fragile environment. We want a Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre.

Please ask the WA Government to save the Alfred Cove A-Class Nature Reserve and the Swan Estuary Marine Park from a risky artificial wave park, by establishing the Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre instead.

Ask the WA Government to protect Alfred Cove by rejecting the wave park development and establishing the Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre instead.

Complete with its own environmentally friendly cafe, the centre would attract local and international visitors of all ages and showcase the incredible birdlife and natural beauty of this special area.

Dear WA Government,

Please save the Alfred Cove A-Class Reserve, Swan Estuary Marine Park, and Tompkins Park from the high impact, large scale, high risk wave park development, and establish the Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre instead.

The wave park would simply be out of proportion with its surroundings. The noise, light, traffic, litter, crowds, water and power consumption (plus the risk of leaks and contamination) presented by the large scale artificial wave park development will place the environment and community under significant stress.

Instead the Melville Bird Sanctuary and Discovery Centre is a low impact proposal which would showcase, rather than obscure and place at risk, the natural beauty and birdlife of Alfred Cove.

The centre, complete with its own low-impact environmentally friendly cafe, would be an intergenerational attraction to Australian and international visitors alike. It would be  interactive and educational to all, from young children to the elderly.
