In just a few short decades, plastic has found its way into almost every part of our lives and into every corner of the planet.

All over the world, the rising tide of plastic pollution is choking, poisoning, and starving our wildlife - and even polluting the food we eat.

Without action, it is estimated that the plastic in our oceans will outweigh our fish by 2050.

Thankfully, from 1 July this year, single use plastic bags will be banned statewide. The Environment Minister has also indicated that the ban could be extended to other plastic pollution like straws and balloon ...

Thankfully, from 1 July this year, single use plastic bags will be banned statewide. The Environment Minister has also indicated that the ban could be extended to other plastic pollution like straws and balloon releases - if there is enough public support.

Now is our chance to show that support. The State Government wants to know how you think the plastic bag ban should be implemented - and what else should be included!

This is one of the best chances we have to address some of our worst plastic pollutants: single use plastic bags, plastic straws, and balloon releases.

All over the world, the rising tide of plastic pollution is choking, poisoning, and starving our wildlife - and even polluting the food we eat.
 
I urge you to recommend the following for Western Australia’s plastic bag ban:
 
1. Ban all single use HDPE bags up to 70 microns. This ban should apply to all wholesalers, importers and retailers who provide these products to their customers both in shop and online, including all small businesses

2. Include all identified ‘biodegradable and degradable’ bags up to 70 microns, as standards used in current laws for biodegradability and compostability do not prevent microplastic pollution

3. Establish an expert taskforce to review and report back to government within one year on recommended actions to restrict other forms of single use plastic packaging not included in the immediate policy. This review should include the identification of alternative products and practices to single use plastic packaging
 
I also support the statewide ban being extended to other forms of plastic pollution including mass balloon releases, single use plastic drinking straws, and products which include plastic microbeads, as all of these products present a continuous threat to our Western Australian wildlife and environment.

I note that the Environmental Protection Amendment (Banning Plastic Bags and Other Things) Bill 2017 provides a ready framework for the Government to deliver this.
