Stop the destruction of the Ocean Reef coastline and foreshore

Our northern Perth coastline is very special. Its sandy coves and limestone reefs are part of the iconic A-Class Marmion Marine Park and 10km strip of Bush Forever, much-loved by locals and visitors. It’s a big part of our community life here. It’s our Kings Park of the north, and the majority of our residents want it to be protected and kept in its undeveloped and natural state.

Our northern Perth coastline is very special. Its sandy coves and limestone reefs are part of the iconic A-Class Marmion Marine Park and 10km strip of Bush Forever, much-loved by locals and visitors. It’s a big part of our community life here. It’s our Kings Park of the north, and the majority of our residents want it to be protected and kept in its undeveloped and natural state.

The proposed 90ha Ocean Reef Marina’s housing estate will destroy up to 30 ha of remnant coastal bushland, habitat for fairy wrens, Quenda and Carnaby’s cockatoos. This area is of cultural significance as a traditional Aboriginal hunting and gathering ground of bush tucker, medicine and Abalone.

It will excise 143 ha of A-class marine park, decimate coastal limestone cliffs and destroy part of the Marmion Marine Park’s inner reef system - a breeding ground for weedy sea dragons and over 60 species of fish, and a haul-out zone for fur seals, sea lions and migratory birds.

It will erode local Aboriginal culture in an already over-cleared landscape, decimate WA’s most lucrative commercial Abalone reef and cause major water quality issues within and around the marina.

As residents and visitors, we all stand to lose a great deal of the lifestyle we cherish. The popular Perth Sunset Strip shared path will be diminished. We will lose Ocean Reef’s popular local surfing breaks, fishing spots and swimming beaches. Beaches either side will be altered by a huge seawall that is to be built to protect this development.

We can build more houses and shops, but we cannot rebuild this Perth coastal landscape with its unique plants, animals, Abalone reef and surf beach.

Join us in calling on the WA Government to halt any further works on the Ocean Reef Marina development and to hold immediate public consultation to determine the future of the Ocean Reef Marina and housing development.

Dear Ministers,

I am writing to ask that you protect the natural coastline of Ocean Reef and this email is my submission to reinstate Bush Forever 325 and the A-Class Marine Reserve in their entirety to preserve species.

I am requesting that you revoke all current clearing permits and uphold the Community Coastal Values Survey, 2018 which asks for a natural coast for recreation over development. I am also requesting that you hold an immediate, fully transparent public consultation to determine the future of the Ocean Reef Marina and housing development.

The Ocean Reef coastline is of great significance to our local community and its visitors. Ocean Reef’s coastal habitats, from its rich inner reef systems and limestone cliffs to its dunes and bushland, support 24 vulnerable species, 42 migratory species and 66 marine species. Of these 4 are critically endangered and 12 are endangered.

The proposed 90ha housing estate and marina will excise 143 ha of A-Class Marine Reserve, decimate a 900-metre gallery of coastal limestone cliffs and wipe out 18% of the Marmion Marine Park’s inner reef system, a breeding ground for weedy sea dragons, over 60 species of fish, and a haul-out zone for fur seals, sea lions and migratory birds.

It will erode local Aboriginal culture and decimate WA’s most productive Abalone reef. It will cause major water quality issues inside the break wall and across 5km surrounding the marina due to increased effluent discharges from the Beenyup ocean outfall.

It will destroy up to 30 ha of remnant Bush Forever site, traditional Aboriginal hunting and gathering ground of bush tucker, medicine and Abalone and habitat for fairy-wrens, endangered quendas, Carnaby’s cockatoos and black-striped snakes.

This expanded residential precinct of over 1,000 homes increases the land area for residential housing by a massive 42%, an expansion, I was never adequately consulted about.

As residents and visitors, we stand to lose a great deal of the lifestyle we cherish. The proposed plan will diminish the popular Perth Sunset Strip shared path. We stand to lose our iconic Mullaloo Beach to erosion – regarded as one of Perth’s top 10 beaches. We will lose Ocean Reef’s popular local surfing breaks, swimming beaches and fishing spots.

I want future generations to enjoy the beauty and diversity of this natural environment.

I support an immediate stop to this development and urge you to consult with the public to determine our wishes in reducing the marina and housing estate footprint.
