Tell Perdaman to rule out buying Scarborough gas

Dear Mr Rambal,

I have serious concerns about Woodside’s proposed Scarborough gas field and its threats to climate change, ecologically unique marine environments and globally significant Aboriginal rock art.

I am writing to request that Perdaman publicly commit to not buying gas from Woodside’s proposed Scarborough development.

I note with concern your company’s commitment to buy 125TJ/d for 20 years from the proposed new Scarborough gas field in Western Australia.

When the International Energy Agency released their scenario for limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees earlier this year, they explicitly excluded the development of new oil and natural gas fields. In other words, no credible path to 1.5 degrees exists without an immediate halt to the development of new oil and gas fields.

The IEA’s report confirmed what we have long known; new gas fields are not compatible with a safe climate. CO2e emissions of 1.69 billion tonnes would be produced over the lifetime of the Scarborough project plunging us further into the climate crisis. As a key enabler of this project, Perdaman would be directly responsible for these increased carbon emissions and their contribution to global heating. As demonstrated by the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, every fraction of a degree of further warming increases the severity of extreme weather events.

In addition, exploiting the Scarborough field would have devastating impacts on ecologically important marine environments. The region is rich in biodiversity, home to turtle nesting beaches, dugongs, dolphins, humpback whales, and migrating endangered pygmy blue whales. As the first of two proposed gas field developments in Woodside’s ‘Burrup Hub’, exploitation of Scarborough would also pave the way for Browse, a gas field that would literally involve drilling in and around the priceless Scott Reef complex. Scott Reef is a highly biodiverse and pristine marine environment, being the largest individual offshore coral reef in Australia.

Finally, the project threatens one of Australia’s and the world’s most significant cultural heritage sites – the Murujuga 40,000 year old rock art which is currently under consideration for World Heritage listing. Air pollution caused by nearby industrial activity (including Woodside’s existing gas plant)  is already causing irreversible degradation to the Murujuga rock art, and the proposed new plant to process Scarborough gas as well as the proposed Perdaman fertiliser facility would exacerbate this harm.

The Scarborough project is widely opposed, and Perdaman’s support for it runs directly contrary to your “aim to grow with the world and help it be better.”
