Dear Environmental Protection Authority,

A new and updated policy is urgently required to tackle the rising carbon pollution from WA’s biggest polluters. This policy could also unlock WA’s potential as a clean state, with benefits for our environment, communities, and economy.

Recent pollution growth from the WA LNG export industry is cancelling out the savings from all renewable energy in Australia. New rules requiring these companies to address their pollution would drive exciting new industries like renewable energy, carbon farming, and clean technology here in WA.

Immediate and deep cuts to pollution from all sources are required to prevent further dangerous climate impacts here in WA. The new EPA policy must:

1. Reflect the science. 
There is already too much carbon pollution in the atmosphere to maintain a safe climate. Projects that increase pollution cannot be considered environmentally acceptable when immediate pollution reduction is required.

2. Prevent new or expanded fossil fuel production. 
Existing fossil fuel developments are already damaging our climate. No new fossil fuel extraction should be approved under any circumstances.

3. Require net zero emissions. 
Avoiding new pollution must be the top priority, followed by reducing and offsetting any remaining emissions. All polluters must be required to achieve net zero emissions as soon as possible, and new projects (including Chevron’s giant LNG facilities) must be carbon neutral immediately.

4. Apply to all polluters and account for all pollution. 
The policy must apply to all activities that impact the climate, including land clearing and deforestation, and must include all pollution, including indirect and overseas emissions.

5. Ensure offsets are delivered in WA to benefit our environment. 
Delivering offsets like tree planting and carbon farming in WA will create new jobs and benefit our communities and environment, however these offsets are limited and should not be used to justify increased fossil fuel production.
