But for many of our animals, survival is the exception rather than the rule.

Faced with ongoing clearing, logging, burning, and destruction of habitat, scientists say that many unique species may become extinct within our lifetimes if things don’t change fast.

Before the 2017 State Election, WA Labor made an important commitment to strengthen wildlife conservation laws. But instead, the McGowan Government is proceeding to implement laws introduced by the Barnett Government - the same laws that were labeled a disaster by scientists, environment groups, and even Labor itself when it was in Opposition.

These laws and regulations fail every key test of protection for our wildlife:

Most forms of environmental damage, including logging, clearing, and burning will be exempt from the laws
There will be no strategy to protect the state’s wildlife and no regular audit of the condition of biodiversity
No extra funding will be made available for wildlife protection
The laws provide little to protect wildlife, but they include a ‘God clause’ allowing the Government to approve the extinction of entire species

Clearly our wildlife deserves better. Wildlife cannot speak for itself – animals need our help. Please take action to demand legal protection for our wildlife!

Hi,

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing decline in our unique wild animals and biodiversity in WA. I was thrilled to see WA Labor's commitment to “Strengthen the Biodiversity Conservation Act” in the party’s 2017 Election Fighting Platform.

But instead, I am very disappointed that instead of stronger laws, deeply inadequate Regulations and Guidelines have been released for public comment.

While we wait for the McGowan Government to implement its election commitment, I believe that much stronger regulations must be developed.

As a minimum, the draft documents should be strengthened, in order to:

1) Prevent any further destruction of High Conservation Value wildlife habitat by land clearing, logging, fire, or other threats.
2) Establish a genuine Independent Scientific Committee, with requirements for the Government to seek and publish the advice of this Committee before making decisions on biodiversity.
3) Require a regular (minimum five yearly) comprehensive audit of biodiversity and High Conservation Value wildlife habitat across WA by the Independent Committee, with the results published and a requirement for the Government to respond.
4) Require the State Government to develop and implement a statewide Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, with regular independent review and reporting by the Independent Scientific Committee.

Finally, I seek a timeframe to be provided for the real strengthening of biodiversity laws promised by WA Labor before the 2017 State Election.
