After being rushed through in secret, the Morrison Government has approved the controversial Yeelirrie uranium project in WA’s Mid West, which places multiple species at risk of extinction.

The decision particularly devastating in light of the announcement from the United Nations that one million species face extinction worldwide, and that Australia has one of the worst rates of extinction. We need to turn things around, and fast.

Labor has called the approval of Yeelirrie a "shonky deal", and has committed to introduce new environmental laws. We need to make sure these laws provide independent, transparent, and science-based assessment processes that protect nature, wildlife, and biodiversity.

With Federal Labor condemning this decision, now is the time to call on them to review the Yeelirrie approval if they form Government after the election.

Please ask Labor Leader Bill Shorten and Shadow Environment Minister Tony Burke to commit to review the flawed Yeelirrie approval, and to introduce national environmental laws that are truly independent, transparent, and evidence-based.

Congratulate Labor on committing to introduce new Australian Environmental Laws. We'd like to see more detail before the election and we would love a commitment from Labor for those to include processes that are independent, transparent, and science-based.

It was great to see Labor calling the Yeelirrie approval "shonky", that kind of secretive deal-making and disregard for the WA court process was a disgrace. Can you make a commitment to review the Yeelirrie approval and set new science based conditions that prevent extinction?

The secretive decision to approve Yeeliirrie puts perceived commercial interests of one company ahead of due process, community concern, and evidence-based decision making

Minister Price’s tick of approval is premature and highly political. The WA community and environment has been let down by both State and Federal Liberal politicians over Yeelirrie.
